Introduction

Course Description: This semester, put your secret people-watching passion to good use by developing the lens of a social scientist. By conducting interviews, field observations, and self-guided investigations, you will hone research and writing techniques that take you out of the classroom and into the community. We will seek to engage with the beautiful multiplicity of human cultures we encounter with the utmost integrity and respect, and to study society and language while thinking about the greater impact behaviors and traditions have upon the collective. I hope this course will help each of you begin your own personal writing practice, acquire a greater fluidity and understanding when encountering the perspectives of others, and encourage you to carry this spirit of inquiry with you throughout your college years and into the world. This class is ideal if you are seeking a career in anthropology, sociology, or psychology.
